REVIEW: My Story Friend

My Story Friend
Author: Kalli Dakos

Ages 4-8

“There is the person

who tells the story.

This is the storyteller.

And there is the person

who listens to the story.

This is the story friend.”

The child narrator is bursting to tell his story. But it is sad, and it might make the listener cry. He has a hard time finding someone to listen to him, but with persistence, he finds an old woman who listens, and empathizes, and doesn’t judge.

“We talked all afternoon,

and I learned

that when we tell our stories

over and over again

to someone who listens

with a big heart,

then our stories become softer

like butter melting in the sun,

and if we are really lucky,

the story tells us what to do.”

I found this title to be poignant and layered with meaning and heart. Appealingly illustrated – that corgi! Swoon! – this gentle book will offer encouragement both to young readers to tell their stories, no matter how sad, and to all of us to be better listeners and story friends.
