Review: The Universe and You

Author: Suzanne Slade
Illustrator: Stephanie Fizer Coleman
Publisher: Sleeping Bear Press
Ages: 4-8

It is very hard to thread the needle and write a well-balanced bedtime storybook that contains STEM elements, be entertaining, and lull a child into the security of falling asleep. Fortunately for us, a few exist and we can now add The Universe and You to the list of those we can rely upon.

Using very few words (perfect for settling a restless child), and a rather calming color palette, the picturebook begins at bedtime and guides the reader into an exploration of our solar system and universe. Gentle in tone, the story concludes the next day with the dawn of a new day.

An appendix contains some wonderful NASA credited pictures of the Earth and Space sure to stir the imagination. The book is aimed at four to eight-year-olds. I would adjust the level to those on the younger side and keep it at the five and under group.
