“I am here. I know who I am. I breathe in the smell of sun-warmed grass and it fills my lungs with energy.”

In these uncertain times, this book felt so grounding to me. The book is probably more suited towards the 3-8 year old crowd, but the words and illustrations were soothing enough and a great reminder to anyone, regardless of age that living in the moment, breathing, feeling, and finding your calm is not only a faint possibility, but within all of our grasp in one way or another.

“I am here. I know who I am. I breathe in the smell of sun-warmed grass and it fills my lungs with energy.”

The importance of meditation and mindfulness has been taking root in the Western world recently especially as it pertains to our kids well being. This book is a beautifully illustrated reminder that we come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds, and that we all possess our own way of finding our inner peace. From yoga, to running, reading, to closing one’s eyes, from the sound of a page turning to blowing bubbles, each two-page spread features children finding their own peace.

I love that the book does not gloss over the fact that life can be hard and scary

“Sometimes my mind is like a mixed-up swirling snowstorm. It isn’t right or wrong — ot’s just how I feel./ Bad feelings are like cold snow melting in my hand. I feel them…I acknowledge them…and eventually they are gone.”

While reinforcing a really strong sense of self.

“I know who I am. I am someone who sees, smells, hears, tastes, and feels the world around me. I know where I am. I am here.”

I cannot say enough about the gorgeous illustrations in this book. Each spread is a masterpiece with its own identity and will invite children and adults alike to revisit again and again.
The book ends with a note on what it means to be mindful with a reminder:

“Breathe in / Breathe out / You are here.”

Raise your hand if you needed to hear that today. I know I did.
