In this whimsical tribute to black hair styles, Lee shares the experience of a little girl preparing to have her hair done for her birthday. Through her eyes, we see how family and friends influence her choice and what she thinks of their styles.

Preparing to celebrate a birthday is always a big deal and something to look forward to. For some, the anticipation includes much more than just the actual celebration. What to wear, the accessories that go with the outfit, how to do their hair. . . it all becomes pretty important and very impactful.

In this whimsical tribute to black hair styles, Lee shares the experience of a little girl preparing to have her hair done for her birthday. Through her eyes, we see how family and friends influence her choice and what she thinks of their styles.

As she considers different possibilities for her birthday hairstyle, she thinks about the ways that friends and family members do their hair. Each person she discusses has a particular way about them and an individual significance for her. She sees their hairstyles as an integral part of who each person is.

While she waits at the salon to have her hair done for her special day, she considers all the different options she has and truly examines what the impact of each option could be. Once her decision is made, she shows excitement in not only what she chooses, but how her choice represents her.

Fatimaharan illustrates the descriptions given with beautiful drawings, rich colors, and perfect compliments to the feelings elicited by those descriptions. Readers can see just what the character sees in each of the people that are a part of her life through the pictures.

This is a story that touches on cultural awareness, traditions, feelings, confidence, and so many other positive aspects of growing up. It depicts a confident, self-assured little girl who is not shy about being herself. In a world where so much is about conforming to expectations, this book offers little girls as well as not so little girls, a view of what it is to be yourself and show your best self to the world around you.
