REVIEW: Click Clack Goodnight
Author: Doreen Cronin

Ages 4-8

It’s been twenty years since we met those typing cows, and Farmer Brown is tired. (Well. Aren’t we all?) It’s time to unplug and go to sleep. The cows, sheep, and chickens are all ready for bed. Why can’t Duck sleep?
In these uncertain times, familiar books act as comfort food for the soul. I’m reading Jane Austen for the umpteenth time. The primary set may well find comfort in the return of the cows that type, and their funny farm friends.

“Duck is not quite ready for bed.
Farmer Brown sings him a song,
reads him a book, turns on the white noise machine, and puts on a shadow puppet show, but Duck is wide-awake.”

This is a great read-aloud, with wonderful parallel structure, and it’s a delight to be reunited with Doreen Cronin’s endearing characters and Betsy Lewin’s charming illustrations. I’m trying not to think about the fact that children who were read Click Clack Moo in the year 2000 may well read Click Clack Goodnight to their children this year. But they will love it, and so will you.
