Sleep Tight With The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Author & Illustrator: Eric Carle
Ages: 3 to 5 years old
As with any Carle work, it does not disappoint.
Eric Carle, a favorite author for years, and one that has been a big part of my teaching journey, brings us a little gem of a book. Not only do his stories always manage to incorporate a multitude of lessons, they are simply and honestly breathtakingly beautiful. So, when I saw this title, I was naturally curious. As with any Carle work, it does not disappoint.
The artwork is typical Carle: colorful and eye-catching. To make it more enticing, he has brought back several of his most loved characters to help tell this cute bedtime story.
Starting in much the same way as his classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, we begin with a bright image of the sun and the Caterpillar making his way through the grass. Rather than rising to begin the day, the sun is setting and preparing to say goodnight, in this lift-the-flap board-book.
As we move through the story, we encounter cricket, owls, ducklings, various farm animal friends, and of course, Caterpillar who begins and ends the story. In order to see all of these friends, young readers must lift flaps throughout the book to find them hidden in the illustration.
Written for ages 3-5, this is a great bedtime story to share again and again. Children will love finding their hidden friends and eventually be able to “read” from memory, opening up the perfect opportunity to encourage a love of reading.
