Review: Baking with Dad

Baking with Dad
Author & Illustrator: Aurora Cacciapuoti
Child’s Play
Ages: 2 to 5 years old, Grades P to K

Baking with Daddy, Cacciapuoti’s light-hearted look at baking a cake with Dad, is a frothy meringue of a book filled with cute doodles and vibrant illustrations.

I have been working in the kitchen with our little boy since birth. One of my fondest memories (so far) is baking a birthday cake for Other Dad while Little Boy fit snugly in the baby carrier. There’s a picture somewhere. For now, you’ll have to make due with the one below. We’ve made it a mission to ensure that Little Boy knows his way around the kitchen

Yes, working with a child, especially a preschooler, in the kitchen requires lots of patience and the understanding that things are going to take twice the amount of time they normally take. But, the payoff is bigtime.

Baking a Pineapple Upside-down Cake for Baba’s birthday. At four years old, it’s never really to early to start exposing your child to baking–whether it’s helping to stir the mix, knead the bread, or placing the cherries.

Baking with Daddy, Cacciapuoti’s light-hearted look at baking a cake with Dad, is a frothy meringue of a book filled with cute doodles and vibrant illustrations. It helps you integrate your child into your kitchen routine and have fun at the same time!

My favorite thing about this book is that it doesn’t try to do too much. It concentrates on one activity, baking a cake, and dedicates the time necessary to telling that particular story.

The book starts out by stating that the day is a special day merely merely because father and daughter are baking a cake together–a lovely sentiment and a wonderful thought to communicate to a child.

The through-line does provide all the steps involved in baking a cake and, together with the pictures, provides an excellent roadmap for new bakers to follow for their first baking adventure. Gathering the ingredients, making the batter, waiting and decorating are all given vivid attention. There is one particular illustration I’ll call the “Carmen Miranda” that has to be seen to be believed. It is quite amazing. You will need to provide your own favorite recipe, however! Perhaps a family recipe?

Left open, is for whom the cake is baked. An Uncle? Boyfriend? Suitor? Cousin? The possibilities are endless and they provide a great vehicle for discussion between the reader and the child.
