Ages: 4-8 years old

A Girl like You is a wonderful, empowering book that gives girls and women of all ages the vitally important message that they are valued, not for how they look, but for who they are.
A Girl like You, written by Frank and Carla Murphy, and vibrantly illustrated by Kayla Harren, is ostensibly a picture book for small children. However, by the second page – I’m serious, page TWO – I had thought of five different women of varying ages I wanted to give it to: my BFF who turns 50 this year, our dear friend going off to college this fall, both of my daughters, a First Communicant, and a colleague’s brand new baby. Wait, that’s six.
A Girl like You is a wonderful, empowering book that gives girls and women of all ages the vitally important message that they are valued, not for how they look, but for who they are. Beginning with the injunction “[t]o be strong and caring. To be brave and bold,” the authors and illustrator give the reader a variety of suggestions for how to inhabit the world as a woman…but never in a preachy, or a scolding way. Rather, A Girl like You is uplifting, and energizing. I felt ready to move mountains after I finished it.

Take pride in being the one and only you.
Unlike anyone else, ever before.

The Murphys’ words are poetic, and aspirational, and Harren’s illustrations are beautiful and hopeful as well, full of diversity of color, age, size and shape. All six women I give it to, young and old, are going to love it. I think you will too.
